‘Anyone who has explored the world of archives will know that it is a treasure house, one that is full of surprises, crossing paths, dead ends, painful reminders and unanswered questions.’
~ Nelson Mandela
Even though I have been a visitor to the archives since a teenager – they are still one of THE most exciting places to go if you are in pursuit of those elusive ancestors!
Surely, nothing can top the thrill of leafing through the pages of a register such as a Poor Law Return or trying to decipher the heartbreak behind the lines penned about someone by the Master of the Workhouse?
The archives I haunt with frequency in and around Yorkshire and beyond include just SOME of the following:
YORK:
The Borthwick Institute
York Explore and Archives
Research Room of York Family History Society
YORKSHIRE:
Hull History Centre
The Treasure House Beverley
North Yorkshire Archives
Scarborough Library
West Yorkshire History Centre
SCOTLAND:
National Records of Scotland Edinburgh
The City Archives Mitchell Library Glasgow
National Library of Scotland Edinburgh
ELSEWHERE:
The National Archives Richmond
London Metropolitan Archives
Norfolk Record Office
Although I undertake the location, retrieval and research of material within an archive on the instructions of a client – I usually require a commission of a minimum of three (3) hours for the study of such archival material and which may include document transcription and photographic images.
However, as every research commission is as unique as the person who is requesting it – our informal chat by way of my no-obligation initial consultation will ensure that my time within the archives is productive for both you and I.
